Buccaneers vs. Cowboys: Game Predictions and Takes
The AllBucs staff shares its predictions and takes ahead of the NFL's season-opener between the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and Dallas Cowboys.
The NFL's season-opening game between the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and Dallas Cowboys is on our doorstep, with the two teams set to face off at Raymond James Stadium on Thursday night.
Besides the fact that the reigning Super Bowl champions are set to take the field, this game serves as the return of Cowboys' star quarterback Dak Prescott, who signed a bank-breaking extension with Dallas this offseason despite only playing five games in 2020 due to a fractured ankle. As such, this could be one of the most-viewed games on the NFL's slate this year.
You can find the AllBucs' staff predictions for the game and what we expect to see below.
Zach Goodall: Buccaneers 31, Cowboys 20
SI Betting lists Tampa Bay as the 7.5-point favorite over Dallas on Thursday with the over/under set at 52. While I think the Buccaneers will cover the spread, I think the Bucs defense will be able to hold the Cowboys to two field goals on drives in scoring position with big plays on third down.
Offensively, I'd figure the Buccaneers' passing game will pick up right where it left off in 2020 and have little-to-no issues moving the ball. The biggest question, for me, is what the Bucs' rushing attack will look like and if it can develop a flow between three meaningful contributors in Ronald Jones II, Leonard Fournette, and Giovani Bernard. I'm thinking Jones will look like the most impressive of the three in week one.
To keep the Joe Tryon-Shoyinka hype rolling after his productive rookie preseason, I bet he records a sack as one of Tampa Bay's big third-down plays on the night.

Matchup preview: Dallas Cowboys vs. Tampa Bay Buccaneers The NFL season will kick off with the defending Super Bowl champion Tampa Bay Buccaneers taking on the Dallas Cowboys from Raymond James Stadium in Tampa, Fla.
The Tampa Bay Bucs were the hot team going into the 2020 NFL season thanks to the arrival of a quarterback named Tom Brady (you may have heard of him). Though there were a few ups and downs to the season and the Bucs had to win three straight playoff games on the road to reach the Super Bowl, they were able to make history as the first team to win the big game when it was hosted at their home stadium. The title marked the second in the Bucs’ history, and number seven for Brady.
Expectations were high last year, but things only get tougher when you’re the defending champs. Fortunately for the Bucs, they spent most of their offseason keeping the band together, bringing back all 22 players who started in Super Bowl LV. Will they be able to repeat the kind of magic they had in the 2020 season, perhaps be even better with Brady now in his second season with the team? Or will Father Time finally catch up to the 44-year-old quarterback?
The first opponents looking to nix a Tampa Bay repeat in 2021 is the Dallas Cowboys. Dallas would like to forget the 2020 season as quickly as possible. Even with a hot start from quarterback Dak Prescott, the Cowboys began the season 2-3 when Prescott went down with a season ending ankle injury. With their star quarterback out, the offense was not able to make up for the historically bad performance its defense put out for most of the season. A string of wins against some of the worst teams in the league in 2020 helped get the final record to 6-10.
Well, Dak is back to start the 2021 season, and even though he had some shoulder issues during training camp, he is said to be good to go for the season opener. The team also made moves to attempt to solve some of its problems on defense, most notably drafting linebacker Micah Parsons during the 2021 NFL Draft. Cowboys fans, and especially owner Jerry Jones, hope that the return of Prescott and a hopefully improved defense can take the Cowboys back to the playoffs where they can try and go for their first Super Bowl title since 1996.
As of publication, the betting line for the Cowboys vs. Buccaneers has Tampa as 7.5 favorites.
Thursday Night Football will hop around between three networks throughout the 2021 season, as well as more than half of the games being available via streaming.
First, NBC, Fox and the NFL Network will carry Thursday Night Football broadcasts. NBC kicks things off with the opening night game featuring the Dallas Cowboys vs. Tampa Bay Buccaneers; it will also broadcast the week 12 Thanksgiving edition of Thursday Night Football that has the Buffalo Bills play the New Orleans Saints.
The NFL Network will have exclusive broadcast coverage of the Thursday Night Football games during week 2, 3, 4 and 16. Every other week (not including the ones NBC has) will be simulcasted on Fox and the NFL Network.
NBC and Fox are basic cable networks that have a local affiliate in essentially every TV market across the country. This makes them available through all traditional cable and satellite providers, barring any carriage disputes; check local listings to find out what channels NBC and Fox are for you.
The NFL Network, meanwhile, is a premium cable network, so subscribers will need to check what package the network is available on through their cable subscriber.
An alternative cable option is through vMVPD services like Fubo TV, Sling TV, Hulu with Live TV and YouTube TV. All of these services offer live streams of major networks, including Fox and NBC. In addition, they all carry the NFL Network as well, though it may depend on what package a consumer subscribes to.

All that is needed to watch these Thursday Night Football games via Prime Video is a subscription to Amazon Prime.
An FYI, starting in the 2022 NFL season, Amazon Prime Video will be taking over the rights to Thursday Night Football from Fox, sharing with the NFL Network, meaning all Thursday Night Football games will be available for streaming.

Any NFL fans over in the U.K. will have the opportunity to watch Thursday Night Football games via Sky Sports’ NFL Channel. The home of live NFL action in the U.K., Sky Sports shows live Sunday, Monday and Thursday games. Should be noted though, that with the time difference between across the Atlantic, the 8:20 p.m. ET kickoffs for Thursday Night Football means a 1:20 a.m. kickoff for U.K. viewers.
If that’s too late (or early) for you, NFL Game Pass is an option. The international version of this subscription service offers live broadcasts of games as well as does the opportunity to watch the full broadcast on-demand or a condensed version of the broadcast that only features the plays.
If none of those options are available or work for you, don’t worry, there’s a way to watch NFL action from anywhere in the world —a virtual private network. A VPN is designed to route network traffic through a specific set of servers in a specific country, allowing viewers to watch content on an encrypted feed over a computer.
Jason Beede: Buccaneers 27, Cowboys 21
I have this game finishing a little closer than Zach and Evan, but I think that's mainly because it's a season-opener and there can be a lot of unknowns in a game like this.
We all saw last year how the Bucs struggled in the first quarter during stretches of the season, but I have a feeling this team will come out and jump out to an early lead. That's in large part due to a normal offseason for veteran quarterback Tom Brady, who now has a better understanding of Tampa Bay's playbook compared to last September.
The one concern I have is Tampa Bay's secondary handling CeeDee Lamb and Michael Gallup in Dak Prescott's first game back after returning from injury. Safety Antoine Winfield Jr. and cornerback Carlton Davis III will have their hands full Thursday night.
Evan Winter: Buccaneers 32, Cowboys 23
I literally had the same score as Zach going in to Thursday night, so instead of Wheel Of Fortune-ing him, I'll just add a couple of points because we all love more points, right?
This game is Tampa's to lose. The Bucs outmatch the Cowboys in most areas and there is simply more consistency on both sides of the ball for the Bucs. The Cowboys are not only getting back a Dak Prescott who hasn't seen live action in basically a year, but they're also breaking in a brand new defense under new coordinator Dan Quinn. In all, the Bucs simply have too much going for them to lose this game.
I think Ronald Jones II has a monster game, rushing for over 150 yards and at least one touchdown on opening night.
The Tampa Bay Buccaneers got off to a strong start in Tom Brady's first year with the team last season, winning six of their first eight games. They hit a bump in the road as they headed into their bye week with three losses in four contests, but returned to win their final four regular-season games and four straight in the playoffs, including Super Bowl LV. Tampa Bay begins the defense of that championship when it hosts the Dallas Cowboys in the 2021 NFL Kickoff Game on Thursday.
Kickoff is at 8:20 p.m. ET in Tampa Bay. Caesars Sportsbook lists Tampa Bay as an eight-point home favorite, while the over-under, or total number of points Vegas thinks will be scored, is 51.5 in the latest Buccaneers vs. Cowboys odds. Before making any Cowboys vs. Buccaneers picks, make sure to check out the expert NFL predictions from SportsLine NFL expert R.J. White.
White, a Fantasy and gambling editor for CBS Sports and SportsLine, ended the 2020 season on an 80-59 run on all NFL picks, returning more than $1,400 during that span. That success is no surprise, as White has cashed huge twice in the world's most prestigious football handicapping competition, the Las Vegas SuperContest. Anyone who has followed him is way up.
Prescott only managed to lead Dallas to one victory in four games before getting injured, but he was putting up impressive numbers. The 28-year-old amassed 1,690 passing yards in those contests, overtaking Kurt Warner (1,557) for most in his team's first four games in NFL history. Prescott threw for at least 450 yards in three straight contests from Week 2 to Week 4 to become the first in league annals to accomplish the feat.
Even without Prescott under center, Dallas' receiving duo of Amari Cooper and CeeDee Lamb had productive years in 2020. The 27-year-old Cooper led the team with a career-high 92 catches and 1,114 yards while finishing even with Lamb and Michael Gallup with five touchdown receptions. Selected out of Oklahoma with the 17th overall pick in the 2020 NFL Draft, the 22-year-old Lamb hauled in 74 passes for 935 yards, which ranked second behind Minnesota's Justin Jefferson (1,400) for most among rookies.
Brady had little with which to work on offense in his final year with New England in 2019, but it was a completely different situation for him in Tampa Bay last year. The legendary quarterback threw touchdown passes to 10 different players and connected most often with Mike Evans, who finished fourth in the NFL and set a career-high with 13 scoring catches. The 28-year-old wide receiver also led the Buccaneers with 70 receptions and 1,006 yards, making him the first player in league history with at least 1,000 receiving yards in each of his first seven seasons.
The 44-year-old Brady also was reunited with former Patriots teammate Rob Gronkowski, who ended a one-year retirement for the chance to recreate the magic the two had in New England. Gronkowski, 32, was tied for second on the Buccaneers in the regular season with seven TD receptions and had two more in Super Bowl LV. Brady and Gronkowski have teamed up for 98 overall touchdowns, the second-most by a quarterback-receiver duo in NFL history behind Peyton Manning and Marvin Harrison (114), and own the league record for most total postseason (15) and Super Bowl (five) scoring hookups.
