Letter from KAC-WA President

Dear KAC Washington members and friends,

Happy New Year!

As 2017 gets under way in earnest, we are facing political transitions in our country, states, and local communities. No doubt there will be challenges ahead, but our professional purpose remains the same. We must continue to strengthen and empower the Korean American community and enhance our reputation and influence through civic education and engagement, community advocacy, leadership, mentorship, and professional networking.

As the new president of KAC-WA, I would like to introduce you to our new officers. Ms. Sara Oh is our Vice-President for 2017-2019 term. She has served as the co-chair for the KAC National Convention, held in Seattle last September and is an active community organizer in Federal Way. As the VP, Business Banking Officer at Bank of the West, Mr. Sunwan Shon will continue to serve as the Treasurer with his knowledge and expertise in financial services. Ms. Yunee Ham will serve as our new staff secretary. She has worked with KAC Washington as the community organizer for the voter registration project and is finishing her last year at the UW, Foster School of Business.

I would like to extend my sincere appreciation to our KAC-WA 2017-2019 Board and Chair, Mrs. Shari Song. Mrs. Song is the founding president of KAPS (Korean-American Professional Society), which merged with KAC-WA as an integral part of the organization with Ms. Song as the first president. Ms. Cheryl Lee, founding president of KAVA (Korean-American Voters Alliance), which merged into KAC-WA, a former KAC-WA President and founding Council member of City of Shoreline, will serve as the Vice-Chair. Together, I am certain that they will provide leadership and guidance on behalf of the advisory board to take us to the next level. They will also support us in collaborating with our first generation Korean-American leaders.

With the new advisory board leadership and our executive board, we held an excellent board retreat and worked on KAC-WA priorities for this term. We are extremely excited to improve outreach to better engage members of the Korean-American community for 2017! Here are some upcoming events:

  • Professional Networking Meeting on February 16th, 2017

  • UW Mentoring Event on February 22nd, 2017

We will also be having ongoing civic engagement projects and events throughout the year. Go ahead and keep in touch by liking us on our facebook page!

Cheers,

Julie Kang, KAC-WA President
